The Slade Pond
Litter picking and maintenance sessions take place at 11am for 2hrs on the 2nd Sunday of each month. Please join us
The ponds were first improved in the mid-1990s when the founder members of the friend's group organised the installation of the weirs that help maintain the level and quality of the water. The common is beautiful but quite arid, so it's lovely to have this body of water that often surprises visitors.
Anyone with even a tiny garden pond will tell you how important water is for biodiversity. Visit the pond at any time to see Moorhens, Ducks, Wagtails, Dragonflies, and Frogs, alongside the more common garden and parkland birds who come down to feed or bathe. I even saw a Partridge here once! We help keep the water clean and flowing and maintain the pond views from the gate and through the railings.
There is always loads to do here, Royal Borough Greenwich help us with repairs we can't handle, and they recently removed a huge Ash tree that fell into the pond, but new volunteers are always made welcome".
